Title: Certificate in French for Business French Keyboard
Duration: 20 weeks for each module (over 1 year)
Entry Requirements: GCSE French at grade C (or equivalent) is required to for the Post GCSE module.
Students with AS French at grade C or equivalent may be permitted to enter at Intermediate level.
Students with A-Level French at Grade C or equivalent may be permitted to enter at Advanced level.


French for Business is offered as three modules (Post GCSE, Intermediate, Advanced).

This certificate is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from all faculties in the university as well as members of the general public.  The course can be accessed through CAN-8, the computer-based language-learning platform in the University's multimedia Language Centre, allowing students to study at their own pace and in their own time as well as having the opportunity to attend weekly one hour tutor-contact sessions.  Each module will be delivered over two semesters.


Ideally suited for students who have a previous knowledge of French, having completed at least three years French tuition at school level.  The module will focus on the development of students’ language skills in French with particular reference to business contexts. It incorporates material, which will equip students with basic linguistic and cultural skills sufficient to cope in a range of business situations.

Topics include: Occupations, telephoning – expressions and numbers, banking, accounting, money, socialising, directions, dining out, and booking a hotel. All topics include vocabulary, grammar exercises, and pronunciation exercises.


This module will build on linguistic competence gained in the introductory module or those who have already gained a level of French. More complex linguistic structures are introduced to enable students to cope in a wide range of business situations. With this course students will be able to enhance their commercial and economic French. Each lesson presents texts and dialogues, and numerous oral and written exercises to evaluate progression. The CAN-8 VirtuaLab system enables students to work more on oral skills, which are essential to be efficient in today’s business world.

Topics include: Le savoir vivre dans le monde des affaires, L’Enterpreprise, Les conditions de travail dans les enterprises en France, La puissance de l’Union Europeenne, Etre patron, Les nouvelles technologies, Parler en public, Les enterprises francaises, Negocier et acheter, L’Etude de marche.


This module will equip students with advanced linguistic skills linked to business situations. Vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar are used in situational exercises using texts and dialogues. The module includes negotiating, interviewing, and contracts.

Topics include advanced vocabulary and conversational skills in: Societies, Un Cas, La Finance Internationale, Emploi, Relations, Europe, Papiers, Cout, Logement and Transports.
