Calgary Reunion
A shared past linked those who met at the Irish Cultural Centre in Calgary on 19 November 2010. The celebratory dinner event was a rare opportunity for those who studied at Queen’s to reunite in Alberta, Canada, with their fellow alumni from Belfast and learn about the current research being undertaken by its leading academics (scroll down and click on the thumbnails to see the photos!).
Professor Chris Hardacre, Head of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in Belfast and guest speaker at the event, highlighted the latest ground breaking research being undertaken at Queen’s in the field of “Green Chemistry”. Green Chemistry attempts to reduce the energy cost of chemical processes and thereby reduce the drain on the world’s finite resources (for example, limiting solvent waste - the largest source of waste in the chemical industry). This is important work when you consider that half of those who have ever been born are alive today and are creating a bigger demand on our planet’s resources than ever before!
Norma Sinte, Director of Development, was also attending and spoke of the importance of Queen’s alumni to the University who, by raising awareness of the work being undertaken currently at Queen’s, can play a crucial role in transforming the future of the University. She reported on the latest initiative to create a Leadership Centre – the only such centre in the whole of Ireland – where tomorrow’s entrepreneurs and business creators can learn how to succeed and thereby transform the economy of the region.
This event was made possible thanks to Noel and Elizabeth Rea and their hard work organizing activities in Canada. If you are interested in initiating a reunion in your area of for your class or subject why not find out more about how the team at Queen’s offers reunion support.
