Docklands Ltd is a private limited company formed in 2003 to provide quality assured Financial/management accountancy services, risk management and economic appraisal services to the public and private sector in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
As a Chartered Accountant, Stephen has been able to provide services to high-profile clients like the Northern Ireland Assembly, Sports NI, DCAL and the Arts Council.
The company continues to be reappointed as a service provider under the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) 'Framework for Financial & Management Services'.

What made you decide to set up your own business?
|
The 'buzz' of winning new work and competing for work. The variety of work has also been great, meeting new people and the freedom to explore new opportunities. |

What has been your biggest challenge so far? |
Making the move out of permanent employment to self-employment. |

What has been your biggest success or triumph so far?
|
I take a certain pride in work we done in providing a Financial Health Check and Business Case/Economic Appraisal for the Grand Opera House, Belfast, which helped the organisation restructure, receive £1.7m in government funding. We played a small part in keeping this great Belfast institution alive and well into the future. |

How do you feel your time at Queen's prepared you for this venture?

Meeting new friends from both the North and South of Ireland and the UK. Queen's give me the confidence to start up a business. I also learnt by having a pint in the Students' Union and the ‘Speakeasy’ you would get insights which you would never learn from any of the books in the library! |

What advice would you give someone considering starting a business? |
Stave off any regrets and give it a go! |

What is your next ambition? |
Continue in business and explore new opportunities in the growing ‘Green’ economy. Recently we launched new software in this area under our innovative “Energy Accountability” brand. |
