Mr Haoting Tang: working for a local company in Belfast

One of the first of students to graduate from the Shenzhen Programme.

I arrived in Northern Ireland 7 years ago and commenced my studies at Queen’s University, Belfast where I studied for a Degree in Management Information Systems.  While the lifestyle in Northern Ireland contrasts greatly with my previous lifestyle in China, it has been positive.

I quickly settled in to the Northern Ireland community and have enjoyed the whole working and living experience.

My experience of Queen’s University Belfast has been good, I found the tutors and staff to be both knowledgeable and excellent communicators, and they showed extreme patience and understanding in ensuring that I comprehended the language at all my tutorials.

Following my graduation I commenced employment with a Northern Irish firm which has been an extremely stimulating experience and has allowed me to bring my skills to bear in the business world and to travel globally, representing the company at a senior level.

Mr Zihao Wang: working for one of the top 4 international accounting companies

Recent undergraduate student from Shenzhen Programme.

Queen’s University is a historical, academic-driven world class university. I am an accounting graduate so I would like to say something about Queen's University Management School.

The Accounting department in Queen’s is not very big - there were only 30 students when I started my first year.  There were 2 overseas students - myself and a Malaysian student. However all my classmates were top students because in the UK only those students who obtain very high A-level exam results have the chance to be accepted as accounting students.

Comparing with other places, especially the cities in England, the living cost and tuition fee are cheaper. General speaking, the welfare in Belfast is much better and also prices of food and other costs are lower.

There are many famous professors in the department of accounting.  You can find out many of their articles from famous journal magazines.  Students are invited to all kinds of seminars and workshops and the professors are all very supportive and they always give students fair assessment to their research works.

General speaking, accounting graduates would be able to carry on their accreditations to their professional qualifications, like ACCA, CIMA.

If you want to become a professional accountant, Queen’s University is your best choice!

Mr Jian Chen: undertaking PhD research degree at Queen’s University Belfast

Graduated in the fifth year group from Shenzhen Programme.

I am doing a PhD in “Feedback Control Using Wireless Network”. My laboratory is located in Ashby Building which was built in 1964 and the research facilities in it are amazing, really world-class. Especially the 10th floor Microelectronics Laboratory its one of the top four standard semi-conductor laboratories in the UK. I finished my first degree in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science of Queen’s University Belfast as well with an excellent First-Class degree. In each year of my undergraduate studying, I obtained Frost-Smith Prize, the Foundational Scholarship and the Best Final Year Project Prize in the field of Telecommunications as one of the top students. The high reputation of the school (Top 5 in the UK) attracted me to keep doing my PhD research following the world famous Professor George Irwin in the field of intelligent system control.

It is great to work somewhere where there is multidisciplinary research taking place with international partners. The experience of meeting friends with different culture background is also fantastic. I have made good friends from a range of nationalities. I would recommend Queen’s to potential students; it has a stimulating student life, is committed to excellence in research and is investing significantly in its facilities for students.

Ms Jiang Liu: postgraduate student at London School of Economics

Recent undergraduate from Shenzhen Programme and is a postgraduate student in London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

I'm now living in big city - London - however I miss Northern Ireland so much! The Irish Sea was so blue, Irish music was so lively, Irish pubs were so cheerful and delicious and also Northern Irish people are so friendly. Northern Ireland is such piece of land with so much natural beauties, not artificial ones, it is full of life. No wonder it is the place which nurtured so many talented poets and artists.

Queen’s is located in Northern Ireland, but the education system is the same as the system in England and the rest of the UK. My subject area was Finance in Queen’s. The most advanced theories about international finance and economics were delivered in the classrooms. During 3 years undergraduate study, we finished many group assignments or individual presentations which were so helpful to develop students’ logical thinking, communication and team work skills. Myself and my classmates have experienced continuous progress of all kind of skills and we were more and more confident about ourselves. This might be the reason why graduates from Queen’s University are so welcomed by employers.
