Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year celebrations were once again the focal point for one of the annual events at Queen's University Belfast.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association of Queen's University (CSSA-QUB) hosted the Chinese New Year evening party, and were joined by the Chinese Society of the University of Ulster in the Mandela Hall at Queen's Students' Union.

Around 400 people - Chinese and locals, attended the celebration - among them the representatives from the Edinburgh consultate and Chinese embassy. As well as providing a fantastic celebration of the New Year, based on traditional Chinese culture, in harmony with other international and local arts performances, the event is another successful way by CSSA-QUB to encourage diversity among Queen's students.

Most of the performances were organised by Queen's students, who offered a stunning range of entertainments in dancing, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese Kong Fu, magic and talk shows and comedy drama. In order to involve more Chinese students abroad, two performers from the University of Dundee also joined in. The evening ended with the spectacular Chinese Lion Dance.

The event, which is supported by the Queen's Students' Union, Queen's Annual Fund, the International Office, was a great success and the organisers hope that next year will be even bigger and better than ever with more local student clubs and societies encouraged to take part next year.
