Dr Kumar came to Queen’s in 2000, after serving as an Assistant Professor and an Associate Professor in Human Geography at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India. He has taught at the University of Cambridge and was a Fellow at Fitzwilliam College. His first degree was from North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong, India. He completed his graduate studies at JNU with a specialisation in Urban and Regional Development. He is the recipient of the Bhoovigyan (Earth Scientist) National Leadership Award from India (2002). He has established key research collaborations in social sciences and humanities with JNU and Assam University.
