What our staff say

Dr Bhaskar Sengupta
School of Planning, Architecture and Civil Engineering

Bhaskar joined Queen’s University Belfast in January 2000. He holds a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata; a Master of Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore; an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Kolkata and a PhD (Engineering) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He is a member of the international TiPOT consortium which recently created the first low-cost technology to provide arsenic-free water to millions of people in South Asia. A successful trial plant is currently in operation in Kasimpore, near Kolkata. Along with its Indian partners at BESU and IEMS, Queen’s has also won a Delphe award from the British Council to run awareness programmes on arsenic poisoning in India during 2009.

“I joined Queen’s as its engineering schools were very highly ranked in The Times Higher Education League Table. The University consistently performs well in UK-wide teaching assessments, which I believe is due to its innovative teaching methods. Although small, Belfast has a diversity of ethnic groups. There is strong community support and space for everyone to enjoy a quality life. It is also very accessible and the quality of its schools is probably the best in the British Isles.”

Emeritus Professor Srinivasan Raghunathan, OBE
Bombardier-Royal Academy Chair in Aeronautical Engineering

Professor Raghunathan obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1970. From 1970 until 1974, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Loughborough University, and in 1974 was appointed as Lecturer in the School of Aeronautical Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. He was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in 1983, Reader in 1986, and Professor in 1995. He held the position of Head of School from 1995–2005, and during that period also held the position of Bombardier-Royal Academy of Engineering Chair (2001–2005).

“Queen’s invitation to host the prestigious ‘Aviation: Industry without Borders’ conference, was a tremendous accolade for Queen’s and Belfast, reflecting the quality and breadth of all the staff in our School. The University practises a strong pastoral care system, with mutually supportive staff, a family-friendly work-place and equal opportunities. It is an excellent environment to conduct research and maintains close links with industry.”
