Described by travel guide Lonely Planet as "hip, historical and happening", Belfast has become a must-see city for visitors from around the globe.
Casting off its old image, Northern Ireland's compact and lively capital, on the banks of the River Lagan, has undergone an amazing transformation, with new investment changing the face and atmosphere of the city. The city's nineteenth century architecture now competes with spectacular new developments.
Regarded as a portal into Europe by many international students, Belfast has enjoyed sustained investment over the past decade and is one of the fastest growing regional economies in the United Kingdom. With a large graduate population, a long history, some impressive architecture and vibrant nightlife Belfast offers a great deal.
Situated in south Belfast, the Queen's campus is just a short walk from the city centre, with its thriving array of clubs, pubs, restaurants and entertainment, and located right beside the lovely surroundings of Botanic Gardens and the Ulster Musem. The museum recently underwent a £17 million refurbishment project and is an excellent place to discover Northern Ireland's treasures from the past and present.
For top class entertainment venues it’s hard to beat the Waterfront Hall, the Odyssey Arena and the Grand Opera House. A range of dramatic, cinematic and cultural events are also held throughout the year, with the Ulster Bank Festival at Queen’s providing an annual autumn highlight.
Film buffs are also spoiled for choice with a range of cinemas throughout the city, including Queen’s University’s very own QFT, Northern Ireland’s only art house cinema.
Belfast is also a shopper’s paradise, with big name stores, boutique designers and shopping centres, including the new £400 million Victoria Square right in the city centre. Check out St George’s Market, one of the best markets in the UK and Ireland and one of Belfast’s oldest attractions.
